Matthew Adams
Licensed Professional Counsellor
I’ve been a practicing therapist since 2015 with experience in treating substance use disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma and adjustment crises, grief and bereavement issues, relational issues, and personality disorders, utilizing a number of modalities and theoretical influences, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Existential, and Mindfulness-, and Transpersonal practices.
More importantly, perhaps, I’ve spent the better part of my professional and personal life experiencing and reflecting on human experiences, what it means to be conscious of our capacities to struggle and persevere, and the importance of embodying and expressing these movements through language, art, culture, and community in ways that help facilitate personal growth through awareness, compassion, and acceptance. For me, therapy is the practice of finding ways of being more fully ourselves in the company of others called to be more fully themselves, vulnerable and open-hearted, respectful, honest, and kind. I value transparency, dignity, hard work, play, taking risks, silence, breath, stillness, connection, being alone, and the embrace of all that life delivers us, the sadness and joy, the darkness and light. It is my goal as a therapist to create and hold a space that helps broaden our sense of belonging, deepen our understanding of our experiences, and re engage those experiences feeling acknowledged, understood, and supported.
